The Pogues played their very first US tour in March 1986, opening in New York City. While the song "Fairytale of New York" was not officially released until 1987, the NYC debut at The World (a club at 254 E. Houston Street, formerly known as The Ritz) helped frontman Shane MacGowan crystallize his vision of the city's Irish-American community.
