Fanelli Café opened

NY's second-oldest food-and-drink establishment (The oldest is The Bridge Cafe.) was founded as a grocery store. It evolved into a saloon in the 1860s and operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition. The building, constructed in 1857, has housed various businesses, including manufacturing spaces. Purchased by Michael Fanelli in 1922 and turned it into a watering hole for the Soho artist community Fanelli Café.
