The Fort Totten Historic District of Queens was designated in 1999. Established in 1857 as the Fort at Willets Point, the district was once part of the defense system of the New York Harbor. Most of the defense buildings were constructed between 1885 and 1914. The majority of the district’s facilities are now operated by the Fire and Parks Departments as well as the Historic House Trust.
