International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union formed

Description

A labor union for employees in the women's clothing industry in the United States. It was one of the largest unions in the country, one of the first to have a primarily female membership, and a key player in the labor history of the 1920s and 1930s.

Factoids

Mink Brigade was a name used, at first mockingly, to refer to wealthy or otherwise socially privileged women, like Frances Perkins, Anne Morgan, and Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, who supported striking workers in the United States. The strikers did not always welcome their help; Emma Goldman told the press that "If the strike is won, it will be on its merits, not because it was assisted by wealthy ladies."
