Intersections, located along the entrance walkway and plaza at Lehman College in the Bronx, is about symbols and knowledge. Images incised in blue-stone are quotes, equations and musical notations suggested by Lehman's faculty in response to my request for the great ideas in each of their disciplines. All departments participated. 2H2 + O2 2H2O from the Chemistry Department proceeds Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" from the Music Department. The quoted voices from ancient and contemporary sources have prompted smiles and ideas of imagined conservations.
The Walkway into Lehman College begins with a bronze owl high on a stone wall. The owl symbolizing wisdom in mythology – continues in the plaza as a shadow made of contrasting paving tiles. The walkway and plaza are made of criss-crossing patterns of Bluestone etched with quotations, equations and diagrams selected by the Lehman facility. As one moves through the intersecting quotations they suggest a conversation between speakers, a collaboration of ideas – in short, wisdom.
