In 1928 Albers was experimenting with stenciling and sandblasting on glass at the Bauhaus which enabled him to be very precise in his craftsmanship. The first iteration of City was damaged, and he remade it as a masonite painting at Black Mountain College in 1936.

Walter Gropius commissioned the large mural version for the escalator entry to Grand Central Terminal from the Pan Am Building which consisted of 486 formica panels. Albers called it ‘My Homage to the City of New York’.

The mural was removed when MetLife acquired the building and put into storage. Five years later, its new owners Tishman Speyer inspected it and discovered that the substrate was made of asbestos, rendering it a health hazard.
