Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) commemorates Japan's surrender, effectively ending World War II. The announcement of Japan's surrender was made on August 15, 1945, in Japan (August 14 in the U.S. and other time zones). However, the formal surrender ceremony took place on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The official commemoration of V-J Day in the U.S. is September 2, while in the U.K. it is observed on August 15. Japan refers to August 15 as a day of mourning and prayer for peace.

*V-J Day in Times Square* is one of the most iconic photographs, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt on August 14, 1945. It captures a spontaneous kiss between a sailor and a woman dressed in white, celebrating the end of World War II. The woman was later identified as Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant, who described the kiss as a jubilant act by the sailor, relieved he didn’t have to return to war. A similar image was taken by Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen.
