Muir Woods National Monument is a protected old-growth redwood forest in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. Established as a national monument in 1908, it preserves some of California’s towering coast redwoods and is named in the honor of naturalist John Muir, though he did not own the land or establish the park himself.
