H3 designed the new visitor center for the New York Botanical Garden in 2004. The visitor center replaces temporary lattice pavilions designed by members of H3 in 1990.
Sited at the Conservatory Gate, the facility consists of a promenade bordered by four pavilions. The first comprises a cafe, a ticketing center, an information booth and group orientation area. The second pavilion houses a plant and book shop, while the remaining two contain commodious restrooms.
The buildings, of regional materials, have undulating roofs and glass walls, making the visitor center a visually integral part of the landscape. Plazas and pathways are interspersed with landscaping to accommodate foot-traffic patterns and to ensure the complex forms an integrated whole.
