In August 1673, the Dutch navy captured New York from the English during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch renamed the city New Orange and re-established New Netherland as a Dutch colony. Anthony Colve was named the new governor.

After peace was restored between the Netherlands and England, the Dutch returned New York to English rule under the Treaty of Westminster signed on Feb 19, 1674, in exchange for the colony of Suriname. The city was renamed New York again.
