"New York State of Mind" is a jazz-infused piano ballad by Billy Joel from his 1976 album Turnstiles. Written as a love letter to his hometown, Joel penned the track in about an hour after returning to New York following a three-year stint in Los Angeles. The lyrics and melody began to come to Joel while he was riding a Greyhound bus on the Hudson River Line route.
