However, corruption-plagued the department in the 1870s-80s, prompting reform efforts like the Lexow Committee and Theodore Roosevelt's leadership. These headquarters were the central location for planning the city's response to the draft riots.

The force moved to a modern Beaux-Arts building at 240 Centre Street to rebuild its image. The Mulberry site was demolished, leaving no trace of its storied history.
