Oct 25, 1957-A notorious mob boss, Umberto Anastasia, later known as Albert, immigrated to the U.S. in 1917 and established control over the Brooklyn waterfront with his brother. Known for his brutal reign and violent temper, at the age of 20, he became angry with a co-worker and strangled and stabbed him, and was thus dubbed the “Mad Hatter”. His reputation for ruthlessness caught the attention of Lucky Luciano, who brought Anastasia into the Morello family, Anastasia was among the shooters who murdered Masseria at Luciano’s order in 1931. Anastasia was made the head of Murder Inc. created by the Commission to ensure that all Five Family members stayed in line. Wanting more power, he led the Gambino (formerly Mangano) crime family (1951-1957) after eliminating Vincent Mangano with Carlo Gambino as his underboss. Vito Genovese, head of the Genovese crime family, was infuriated when Albert Anastasia assumed control of the Mangano family instead of him. Determined to eliminate Anastasia, Genovese gained the support of other mob leaders, setting the stage for Anastasia's downfall. Realizing the threat to his life, Anastasia went into hiding to evade his enemies. When he finally came out of hiding, Two gunmen assassinated him during a shave at the Hotel's barbershop, and the case remains unsolved. Rumors suggested that "Crazy" Joey Gallo and his brother Larry were involved, due to Joey Gallo's self-proclaimed title as a member of the “Barbershop Quintet."
