Brooklyn's Plymouth Church, earned a reputation as a key station on the Underground Railroad. Its first minister, Henry Ward Beecher, used the church to hide fugitive slaves and held mock slave auctions to protest slavery and raise funds for their freedom. His most famous auction involved a 9-year-old girl named Pinky, whom he symbolically freed in front of 3,000 people. The church remains an active congregation in its original location within the Brooklyn Heights Historic District.
