Yankee Stadium is one of the best-known unofficial landmarks and tourist destinations in NYC. Home to the New York Yankees Baseball Team, the original stadium was completed in 1923, significantly renovated in 1976 & was one of the oldest operating major league baseball parks in the country until its demolition. The new ballpark was constructed across the street, north-northeast of the 1923 Stadium, on the former site of Macombs Dam Park. The ballpark opened April 2, 2009, when the Yankees hosted a workout day in front of fans from the Bronx community. The first regular season game was played on April 16, 2009 a 10â€"2. Much of the new stadium incorporates design elements from Osborn Engineering's 1923 Yankee Stadium, paying homage to the teams' history. (To compare the two, just look south.) Although stadium construction began in August 2006, the project of building a new stadium is one that spanned many years and faced many controversies, particularly the allocation of city funds for construction instead of urban renewal projects. The stadium cost a total of $1.5 billion, making it the second most expensive stadium in the world after the $1.57 billion Wembley Stadium.
