As the neighborhood transformed and much of its Jewish population moved away, Yonah Schimmel’s remained one of the last authentic symbols of Jewish culinary culture in the area. By 1916, the bakery operated multiple locations across the Lower East Side. The shop relocated to its current site in the 1930s during Houston Street’s widening for subway construction.
