<p>Explore the blend of old and new at South Street Seaport, home to the largest collection of restored early 19th-century commercial buildings in New York and the newly reimagined Tin Building, now a culinary marketplace by Chef Jean-Georges. The tour begins at the 60-foot Titanic Memorial Lighthouse at Fulton and Water Streets, built in 1913 to honor those lost in the RMS Titanic disaster. Once New Amsterdam’s first port and later the bustling Port of New York and Fulton Fish Market, the Seaport has been a hub of global trade since the 17th century.</p>

 In the first half of the 19th century, the South Street seaport area was the mercantile center of New York City. 4 and 5 story Federal and Greek Revival brick buildings, resting on landfill, served as wholesale stores, warehouses, and counting houses. It is here that city merchants bought and sold the various imports and exports transported by ship to and from the East River harbor. Today, the neighborhood, comprised of Fulton Fish Market, South Street Seaport Museum, and the Schermerhorn Ron, is the only cohesive survival of early New York City's commercial district.

 Richard Haas on his public art project near Hecht Slip, a mural on a Con Edison substation. Haas used oil paints to replicate elements of old photographs of architecture in Manhattan. The mural was redone in silicate paint after 9/11, when the electric company had to break through the wall in order to rewire generators. The project was sponsored by Con Edison and the organization City Walls.
