1908 - Hotel Attraction - Renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí reportedly proposed the visionary Hotel Attraction for Lower Manhattan. Rising 1,180 feet, the fantastical skyscraper would have been the tallest building in the world and decades ahead of its time, with an organic, sculptural form unlike any American skyscraper of the era. Although never built—and known today only through later drawings and accounts—the design has become one of architecture's most intriguing "what if" projects.

2016 - World Trade Center Transportation Hub - The first building completed at Ground Zero was the architecturally inspirational transportation hub with the Oculus as the iconic public entry to commect the disparate subway and PATH systems, and improve of east-west pedestrian connectivity. The goals also included a place for transportation, retail, and community in a way that had not been experienced in the past, while also providing simple and easy to navigate connections to the commercial components of the World Trade Center Site. The below-grade Concourses, transit entrances to Towers 1, 2 and 4, and the PATH Mezzanine with Platforms A and B, are now open to the public and achieving the civic goals established in the days when such things seemed almost insurmountable.

2022 - St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine - St. Nicholas replaced the original church of the same name that was destroyed during the September 11 attacks in 2001—the only house of worship, and only building outside the original World Trade Center complex, to be completely destroyed. Its architecture draws from Byzantine influences, namely the Church of the Savior and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, as well as from the Parthenon in Athens. One of the most unique features of his design is a glowing façade made of 1,000 eighth-inch thick panels of Pentelic marble, sandwiched between panes of glass. This material allows light to indirectly filter into the church during the day and for the walls to have a warm glow from the outside at night. In addition to serving as a Greek Orthodox parish, St. Nicholas is officially planned as a "House of Prayer for all people" that will function as a national shrine and community center, incorporating a secular bereavement space, social hall, and various educational and interfaith programs.

The building was planned for construction in Lower Manhattan, and designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. 1913 - Oyster Bar - A banquet was held the night before Grand Central Terminal opened for 100 people invited by the building's architects Warren and Wetmore. The subterranean space is noted for its white tiled Gustavino Vaults. The vaults have an unusual acoustic property in that they amplify sounds as a 'Whispering Gallery'.

1985 - New York Tower - New York Tower was a visionary but never-built skyscraper designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Conceived as a mixed-use tower containing residences, hotel rooms, and offices, the project used monumental arches, classical proportions, and a triangular footprint shaped by Manhattan's street grid. Bofill's design challenged the prevailing modernist language of glass-and-steel towers, proposing instead a skyscraper inspired by the scale and grandeur of classical architecture. The project was featured in the Museum of Modern Art's 1985 exhibition Ricardo Bofill and Leon Krier: Architecture, Urbanism, and History, which examined new approaches to history and tradition in contemporary architecture. Although the tower was never built, its design offers a striking vision of an alternative New York skyline.

1939 - Dali's Dream of Venus - Salvador Dalí’s Dream of Venus was one of the most provocative attractions of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Designed as a surrealist “funhouse,” the pavilion rejected the fair’s streamlined vision of the “World of Tomorrow” in favor of a bizarre dreamscape of distorted forms, underwater scenes, performers, and fantastical imagery. Dalí clashed with fair organizers, who censored some of his more outrageous ideas, prompting him to issue a manifesto defending “the Independence of the Imagination.” The pavilion became a popular and controversial experiment that challenged the boundary between fine art and popular entertainment.
