About this Tour Stop...

Designed by Atlee B. and Robert M Ayers in 1927. They were the city's most prolific firm of the 1920's and 1930's. It was not surprising for buildings of this time period to adopt architectural forms and details evoking San Anotnio's Spanish heritage. Although rather austere on the exterior the interior contains some extremely fine detailing. This was part of the larger complex developed on Bowens Island. The land under the Tower-life building and this building was part of 5 acre peninsula called Bowen's island. It was named for John Bowen, an Irishman who was the City's first postmaster. The island itself was eliminated in 1913 by private developers seeking to develop the property.
