Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, serving from 1929 to 1933. He was a Republican, a mining engineer, and a humanitarian. Hoover’s presidency was marked by the onset of the Great Depression, which began in 1929, and he was criticized for his handling of the crisis. Hoover’s administration implemented several policies to try to alleviate the economic downturn, including the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which provided loans to struggling businesses, and the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which raised tariffs on imported goods. Despite these efforts, the Great Depression continued to worsen, and Hoover was defeated in the 1932 presidential election by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
