Believe it or not, 'One Armed' Charley Monell, the proprietor of New York's most notorious saloon on the Fourth Ward, the 'Hole in the Wall' employed women criminals as bouncers, among them Gallus Mag. Standing more than 6' tall, she got her nickname from the galluses or suspenders she used to hold up her skirt. Her method of maintaining order was to club her victim to the floor and pick up the offender with her teeth firmly clenched on one of their ears which inevitably ended up in her collection of human ears that she kept in pickle jars behind the bar.
Her arch enemy was Sadie the Goat who rammed her marks in the stomach. When they fell, she would rifle their pockets. At some point, they antagonized each other and a savage fight ensued. Their encounter didn't go well for Sadie who slunk off earless to the more hospitable west side. The plundering wasn't quite as successful in that location; after several months she cashed in the booty, returned to The Waterfront, made amends with Gallus Mag who returned her ear which she proudly wore in a locket around her neck. We should point out that given the colorful nature of these ladies' exploits, there has been more than a little speculation that perhaps Herbert Asbury took a bit of literary license with the facts when he wrote about them in the Gangs of New York since actual records of the women and the heinous crimes they committed are scant.
