In his final years, Charles Dickens embarked on a farewell reading tour across England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1868–69. Despite declining health, he completed 87 public readings. The demanding schedule took a toll on him. He suffered a stroke in April 1869 and another on June 8, 1870, at his home, Gads Hill Place, after a full day of work on his unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He never regained consciousness and died the following day, June 9, 1870, at age 58.
