The Nineteenth Amendment

Description

The 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920, prohibited denying the right to vote on the basis of sex. However, it did not guarantee voting access for all women: Jim Crow laws, racial discrimination, and other barriers continued to disenfranchise many Black women, Native American women, and Asian American women. The broader struggle for universal voting rights continued for decades after 1920.

The Seneca Falls Convention in New York kicked off the organized women's rights movement.

March, 1913

Suffragists hold a massive march in Washington, D.C. to demand change.

Passed by Congress, June, 1919

Congress passes the 19th Amendment.

Ratified, Aug 18, 1920

Tennessee becomes the 36th state to ratify the amendment, making it official law.
