The Demologos launched

1st steam powered warship; Steam frigate Fulton

Description

The Demologos launched becoming the 1st steam-powered warship. Built to defend New York Harbor from the Royal Navy during the War of 1812. The vessel was designed to a unique pattern by Robert Fulton and was renamed Fulton after his death.

Destroyed, June 4, 1829

Destroyed in an accidental gunpowder explosion.

Factoids

Aug 18, 1824 -General Lafayette, his secretary Auguste Levasseur, and others visited the Navy Yard at the invitation of Commandant George Rodgers. They then toured the steam frigate Fulton, which Levasseur described as a “floating fortress” built for coastal defense.
