Job Burlock homestead

Description

The original Job Burlock homestead, a historic Loyalist property from the Revolutionary War. The site of his original 18th-century home is currently home to the Trackside Teen Center. The house is deeply tied to the history of Wilton; Burlock was a known Loyalist sympathizer whose property was confiscated by Patriots during the war. Upon returning to his home in 1783, he was tragically shot on his own front doorstep.

Statue of King George III-A 21-inch lead hand and forearm from the toppled statue of George III was discovered in 1991 in the garden of a former Loyalist homestead in Wilton, Connecticut. The property had belonged to Job Burlock, a known Tory who sheltered British agents during the American Revolution, suggesting that Loyalists hid fragments of the statue to prevent them from being melted into musket balls by Patriot forces.The lead fragment, complete with iron attachment nails from the statue's internal framework, is one of the largest surviving pieces of the monument. Its discovery provided remarkable physical evidence of the statue's dramatic destruction in 1776 and the efforts of Loyalists to preserve parts of the royal monument.
