George ‘The Human Fly’ Willig, a 28-year-old mountain climber and toymaker from Queens, New York, took New York City by storm when he scaled all 110 floors of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. It’s a feat that hasn’t been successfully completed since. At the time of Willig's climb, the South Tower was the third-tallest building in the world, right behind the North Tower and the Sears Tower. Willig was immediately arrested upon returning to the ground. He was booked for criminal trespass and other charges. Willig began his journey at 6:29 a.m., with his brother Stephen P. Willig, 22, and friend Gerald R. Hewitt, 28, with him. They remained on the ground. Three-and-a-half hours later, Willig makes it to the tower's top.
