This exedra, or curved outdoor bench, honors public servant Waldo Hutchins. He was an original member of the Board of Commissioners of Central Park which oversaw the park's design, construction, and management in its infancy. This monument measures nearly four feet high by twenty-seven feet long. Three semicircular lines inscribed in the paving match the bench's shadow lines at 10:00 AM, noon, and 2:00 PM at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes. The Latin phrases etched into the back of the bench read Â"Alteri Vivas Oportet Sit Vis Tibi VivereÂ" and Â"Ne Diruat Fuga Temporium,Â" meaning Â"you should live for another if you would live for yourselfÂ" and Â"Let it not be destroyed by the passage of time,Â" respectively.
