About

The sculpture collection in New York City's Parks constitutes the greatest outdoor public art museum in the United States. A veritable “Who's who” of American art, it includes the work of nineteenth-century masters such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French and John Quincy Adams Ward, as well as contemporary subjects and conceptions by the likes of Louise Nevelson, George Segal, Alice Aycock and Robert Graham. More than 1,000 monuments, 300 of which are sculptures, grace our most prominent civic spaces as well as the many localities which constitute the greater metropolis. Ranging in size from commemorative tablets to triumphal arches, they honor people and events that helped shape our city, nation, and the international community. It is this cultural and aesthetic legacy that we wish to preserve.

Established, 1967

Mayor Lindsay began the ‘ Art in the Parks’ program to place contemporary art in its public parks on a temporary basis, challenging the conventional confines of museums and galleries as the main venue for the display of art.

Located on Leonard Street between Centre and Lafayette Streets

In 1796, John Fitch (1743-1798) launched one of the first experimental steamboats on the waters.

In 1805, in order to drain the garbage-infested waters, designers opened a forty-foot wide canal that today is known as Canal Street.

Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Collect Pond was a favorite spot for picnics and ice-skating.

This park occupies the eighteenth century site of Collect Pond.
