As part of the Celebration of Vehicles of Transportation. Wilbur Wright made a long-distance flight of more than 33 minutes and approximately 20 miles from Governor's Island to Grant's Tomb and back, again circling the Statue of Liberty. It is estimated that a million people witnessed Wilbur's flight up the Hudson from Governor's Island.Wilbur Wright was contracted for $15,000 to make a series of flights during the two-week Hudson-Fulton Celebration in 1909, which was commemorating the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first entry into what would become New York Harbor, and the centennial of Robert Fulton’s first voyage of his North River Steamboat up the Hudson River in 1809. Wilbur also made a seven-minute flight on September 29th , circling the Statue of Liberty.
