The third part of the tour takes us from 1901 - 1950 and covers both World Wars, the roaring 20's and the Depression that followed.&nbsp;

American Presidents in NYC (1901-1953)

Born on East 20th Street, Teddy Roosevelt grew up in the city. &nbsp; He was homeschooled and suffered from asthma. &nbsp;His father died when he was a student at Harvard leaving him enough money to support him for the rest of his life. &nbsp;Roosevelt started his political career early serving as a Representative in Albany. &nbsp;While he was there, his wife died two days after giving birth and his mother died the same day. &nbsp;Heartbroken, he left the infant Alice in the care of his sister and went to North Dakota for two years. &nbsp;When he returned he remarried and resumed his political career serving on the Civil Service Commission and then as the Police Commissioner, then Asst Secy of the Navy before being elected Governer. &nbsp;He was Vice President for about 6 months until McKinley.&nbsp;Harper's Magazine gave Mark Twain a 70th Birthday party at Delmonico's Restaurant and invited the literary luminaries of the day. &nbsp;Because Twain's actual birthday fell on Thanksgiving Day (Nov 30) Twain was worried that his guests would not be able to accept his invitation; he resourcefully sent George Harvey to the White House to ask Roosevelt to move Thanksgiving which he refused to do. &nbsp;But, he did write a letter which was read to a standing ovation. &nbsp;After his presidency, in 1908 he went on an African Expedition with the head of the Smithsonian. &nbsp;On his way to Pier A, he stopped at Ambecrombie &amp; Fitch and outfitted himself with 'snake-proof sleeping bags and multiple weapons'. &nbsp;

On November 14th, William Howard Taft came to New York to dedicate the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument &nbsp;in Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park. Selling Liberty Bonds in New York City Liberty Loan Rally held by former President William Taft on the trading floor to kick off the government's lavish campaign to encourage Americans to purchase low interest war bonds. Alter of Liberty Dedication President Wilson, his wife Edith, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. W. H. Bolling, lead the 4th NYC parade drive to sell liberty bonds. The ceremonies included the dedication of the Altar of Liberty in Madison Square. September 27, 1918President Woodrow Wilson wore Brooks Brothers to his inaugurationThe triangle was named Woodrow Wilson Triangle after the 28th President (1913–1921). He was actively involved in the World War I armistice and the creation of the League of Nations, and for his efforts was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919. Clifford Milburn Holland died, cancelling the opening The stress and long hours working on the tunnel project caused him to have a nervous breakdown, and he went to a sanatorium in Battle Creek, Michigan, in order to recover. On October 27, 1924, Holland died of a heart attack there, at the age of 41 Died, October 27, 1924Holland Tunnel Presided over the inauguration of the opening. President Calvin Coolidge, aboard his yacht, the Mayflower, at anchor in the Potomac River, pressed a button that rang a large brass bell at the entrance. Opened, Nov 13, 1927Elected to New York Life's board of directors. Just one year earlier while Coolidge was still president, the New York Life building opened for business on 51 Madison Avenue. A few weeks after the building's opening, New York Life President Darwin Kingsley delivered a radio address to commemorate the occasion, while then President Coolidge pressed a button in the White House and unfurled an American flag in the Home Office lobby. 1st public demonstration of inter-city television Hoover was the first president to appear on TV, even though he wasn’t president yet. Demonstrated, Apr 7, 1927Empire State Building President Hoover dedicated the Empire State Building, pressing a button in the White House that turned on the building’s lights for the first time, 45 five days ahead of its original projected opening date. Some 350 guests attended the opening ceremony and the following luncheon, including New York Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt and former Gov. Alfred E. Smith. Fog obscured the view from the luncheon site on the 86th floor. May 1, 1931The Waldorf Astoria Herbert Hoover announced the opening 1931. and it was his residence from his retirement for over 30 years 1933 - 1964Hoovervilles Hoovervilles were shantytowns built by homeless people during the Great Depression, named after President Herbert Hoover, who was blamed for the economic crisis. 1977-The musical Annie has a song called "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover", which takes place in a Hooverville beneath the 59th Street Bridge. 1930 - 1940

Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House The double town house (beige building with arched doorway, center) is a Neo-Georgian townhouse at 47 and 49 East 65th Street. It originally held "two mirror-image residences with a single facade and entrance. Each first floor had its own front reception room with a welcoming fireplace. Rear parlors could be combined through sliding doors. It was designed by Charles A. Platt for Sara Ann Delano Roosevelt Constructed, 1907US Gold Reserve Act the Act was the culmination of Roosevelt`s controversial gold program. Among other things, the Act transferred ownership of all monetary gold in the United States to the US Treasury and prohibited the Treasury and financial institutions from redeeming dollars for gold. January 30, 1934The New Deal Franklin Roosevelt in Washington who allocated what became $1.5 billion funding for municipal welfare and public works projects. Fiorello La Guardia, NY's 99th Mayor who provided the reformist vision, and his commissioner, Robert Moses, who implemented the projects. Between the three of them they managed to get the West Side Highway, East River Drive, Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Triborough Bridge, LaGuardia Airport, and Floyd Bennett Field, in addition to public pools, parks and artwork built. Harry S. Truman authorized the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 to end World War II, following the successful Trinity test. Unaware of the top-secret Manhattan Project until after FDR’s death, Truman was briefed in April 1945, subsequently establishing the Interim Committee and overseeing the transition to civilian control with the 1946 Atomic Energy Act.
