“I was thinking about cocktail glasses, which brought me to an architectural image of glass boxes, and I thought, Eureka that’s it (refined, as Mike Crosbie brilliantly observed, into ice cubes). So this is an essay about transformations of historic buildings by adding tiny glass boxes, which completely change what’s there. These are small interventions that transform an old building into something modern and useful.
