“I was thinking about cocktail glasses, which brought me to an architectural image of glass boxes, and I thought, Eureka that’s it (refined, as Mike Crosbie brilliantly observed, into ice cubes). So this is an essay about transformations of historic buildings by adding tiny glass boxes, which completely change what’s there. These are small interventions that transform an old building into something modern and useful. Thinking back on that image, I see that the power of one small ice cube to permeate and transform a drink is exactly how I was describing a series of buildings.” - Frances Halsband
