Tamanend, also known as Tammany or "the Affable," was a prominent leader of the Lenni-Lenape nation, particularly the Turtle Clan, in the Delaware Valley. He is best known for signing a peace treaty with William Penn around 1683. Tamanend's legacy as a symbol of peace and diplomacy led to his veneration as the "Patron Saint of America." Tammany societies, including the influential Tammany Hall, were established across the U.S. after the Revolutionary War, further cementing his mythic status.
