The American Colonization Society (ACS) was founded to promote the migration of free Black people to Africa, with a significant focus on addressing societal tensions in the U.S. at the time. Although some supporters viewed the initiative as beneficial, it was met with resistance from African Americans and abolitionists who saw it as racist and counterproductive. The society transported a small fraction of African Americans to what became Liberia, yet faced high costs, opposition, and poor outcomes due to high mortality rates and limited resources, ultimately failing to impact the institution of slavery.
