Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States (1829-1837) and was a general during the War of 1812. In January of 1815, his troops won a decisive victory over the British during the Battle of New Orleans. This event was the highlight of his military career and solidified his status as a national hero. However, Jackson remains a controversial historical figure due to his role in the deterioration of American Indian rights and his status as a slave holder. Jackson's two terms as President of the United States were punctuated by his censure by the U.S. Senate, the Eaton affair, the Nullification Crisis, and his use of the spoils system.
