An American soldier, statesman, and a key Democratic-Republican figure in the early United States. He served as the fourth vice president of the U.S. from 1805 until his death in 1812, under both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Clinton was also New York's first governor, holding office from 1777 to 1795 and again from 1801 to 1804, making him the longest-serving governor in U.S. history until 2015. A veteran of the French and Indian War, Clinton was a staunch Anti-Federalist who championed the Bill of Rights. His legacy continued through his nephew, DeWitt Clinton.
