James Wines, winner of the Smithsonian Institution’s 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, is an architectural designer, visual artist, and writer. He is the founder of the multidisciplinary practice SITE, a New York City based architecture practice and a Professor of Architecture at Penn State University. During the past decade, he has lectured worldwide and there have been twenty-two monographic books and museum catalogues produced on Mr Wines’ projects for SITE and their related models and drawings. His book DE-ARCHITECTURE was published by Rizzoli International in 1987, and in 2000, Tashen Verlag in Germany released his book entitled Green Architecture. Some of his most notable projects include the Best Products Showrooms and the Shake Shake at Madison Square Garden. He has been the recipient of over 25 art and design awards such as The American Academy in Rome, The Guggenheim Foundation, and the Pulitzer Prize for Graphics. Wines was educated at Syracuse University, where he studied art history, sculpture and literature, graduating with a Bachelor or Arts in 1956.
