Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was the wife of the first President of the United States, George Washington. She was born on June 2, 1731, in New Kent County, Virginia, and was raised in a wealthy family. Martha was married to Daniel Parke Custis, with whom she had four children before his death in 1757. Two of their children died in infancy. Martha was left a wealthy widow and inherited a large estate, which she managed until her marriage to George Washington in 1759. Martha became a beloved figure in the American Revolution, fundraising, visiting and caring for her husband and his troops during the war. She also hosted many political events and gatherings at their home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, during George Washington's presidency. After his death, Martha lived out the rest of her life at Mount Vernon, becoming an important figure in American history and a symbol of the country's early years. She died on May 22, 1802, at the age of 70.
