Valentine Mott, born in Glen Cove, New York, was a prominent 19th-century surgeon. Educated at Columbia College and under Sir Astley Cooper in London, he became a professor of surgery at Columbia in 1809. Mott performed groundbreaking operations, including the first successful ligation of the innominate artery in 1818. He also pioneered carotid artery surgery in the U.S. and performed numerous amputations and lithotomies. After seven years in Europe, he helped found the NYU School of Medicine and translated major surgical works.
