Philip Livingston, a slave trader and a politician born in Albany, New York, graduated from Yale College in 1737. He became an alderman and also attended the Colonial Convention at Albany in 1754. Livingston was selected as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1776 and strongly supported the Declaration of Independence. He was elected to the state Senate following the adoption of a new Constitution for New York State.
