The award-winning renovation and expansion of the Music Building consolidates dispersed academic resources, revitalizes a prominent 19th-century landmark, and provides new common spaces for faculty and students. The completed project serves as a model for the compatibility of historical and contemporary design expression. Equal in size to the existing structure, the addition extends the building`s massing, materiality, rhythms, and proportions. The most acoustically critical programs, including classrooms, recital and practice rooms, recording studios, and faculty offices, are housed in the addition. The Penn Music Building addition received a SCUP /AIA-CAE Excellence in Architecture Addition or Renovation Merit Award, a BSA Citation Award for Design Excellence, a Preservation Alliance Achievement Grand Jury Award, and a Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award.
