The Bayard family had a significant influence in early American history, with roots tracing back to Ann Stuyvesant Bayard, who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1647. Nicholas Bayard acquired substantial land in Manhattan by the late 17th century, establishing an estate that later became the Bayard farm. His descendant, William Bayard Jr., maintained a close relationship with Alexander Hamilton. The Bayard estate was eventually sold and divided into lots in 1833.

Photograph shows a plaque on the corner of a building which reads, "82 Jane St. Site of the William Bayard House. Where Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the Treasury, died after his duel with Aaron Burr, July 12, 1804. This historic location holding traditions of the city and the nation, is thus permanently marked by the present owners of the property, 1936".
