The British had arrived at Lexington Green at 5 am. The provincial militia had been waiting all night. It wasn't clear how the skirmish actually started or who fired the first round. The British then went to Concord to destroy the Patriot's stores of arms, but those had been hidden. There was a rally near North Bridge and then the British returned to Boston. They came under fire during most of the way back and returned with 300 troops killed, wounded and missing. American casualties were 93 killed, wounded, and missing.
