One of New York's earliest opera houses before becoming one of the first Broadway theatres. Italian immigrant and restaurateur Ferdinand Palmo conceived the theatre, converting the former Stoppani's Arcade Baths building into a performance venue with modest alterations in 1843.
Opera performances ceased in 1848, and William Evans Burton leased and renamed it Burton's Theater for plays and other entertainments. In 1856, under new lessee Edward Eddy, it was rebranded as the Chambers Street Theatre and operated until its closure in 1864.
