Lombardi opened a small grocery store in New York City's Little Italy. (The alternate story states, Lombardi came to the US in 1904 and worked as an employee at the store). An employee of his, fellow Italian immigrant Antonio Totonno Pero, began making pizza for the store to sell.
The pizza became so popular that they opened the first U.S. pizzeria (contested story), naming it Lombardi's. It was the 1st full service pizzeria in America.
