Larry Kirkland has dedicated his artistic career to large-scale public works that mainly function in commercial areas. This site-specific sculpture appears weightless, suspended from the ceiling. Fine lines and slivers of color create a sweeping movement that plays against mesh rectangles and narrow tubular steel rods. Kirkland`s background in textile design, along with architectural and industrial elements inspire the artist`s choice of materials. Kirkland says, “Scale, architecture, detail, combined with natural and artificial light, and the variety of human vantage points significantly affect the sculpture.” The grid-like surface leads the eye around Flywheel, guiding viewers around the work, capturing its full, dramatic effect.
