The Fashion Center Business Improvement District (BID) transformed the Garment District's identity with a monumental public icon: a 3D representation of a button and needle. Designed by Michael Bierut, the structure includes a stainless steel needle and fiberglass button. It was built to give the district a recognizable landmark, reflecting its historical significance in garment production. Despite complex construction challenges, the installation, awarded the 1995 Art Commission Award for Public Architecture, remains a defining feature of the area.
