The conquest of New Netherland occurred in 1664 as an English expedition led by Richard Nicolls that arrived in New York Harbor effected a peaceful capture of New Amsterdam, Fort Amsterdam and the Articles of Surrender of New Netherland were agreed.
Governors Island Park and Public Space-Governors Island was originally part of New Amsterdam, but when the British seized the settlement and renamed it New York, they also claimed the island It was designated "for the benefit and accommodation of His Majesty’s Governors," earning the name Governors Island.
