Keith Haring gifted the murals in 1986 to Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. In the proposal for the mural, Haring explains how he was inspired to embellish the architectural frieze in the lobby space with cheerful figures with splashes of bright, primary colors. The 700 foot mural greets the patients entering the hospital, in order to provide an uplifting, positive ambience. Haring`s playful figures continue down two corridors that branch off the main lobby. While the lobby figures are abstract shapes, the hallway figures have interesting details like smiling faces and clothing.
