1st House to have gas in New York City


When gas was introduced, the public was not onboard.  There was a lot of opposition outlining all the many real and potential catastrophes that might occur.  So, Samuel Leggett, the President of the New York City Gas Light Company decided to install gas in his own home and invite people in to witness the light and comfort it brought.  Which turned out to be quite successful.
