Conference House

Description

The Conference House was built in the late 1600s and is the only pre-revolutionary manor still standing in New York City. It was the site of the Staten Island Peace Conference in September of 1776, which was an unsuccessful attempt to end the American Revolutionary War. Despite this failure, this building is an extremely important landmark in US history.

Factoids

Sept 11, 1776 -John Adams, our second president, participated in the famous meeting between British Lord Admiral Richard Howe and Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge at a house owned by British army colonel Christopher Billopp on the southern tip of Staten Island. At the meeting, Lord Howe offered to end the conflict peacefully if the American colonies would return to British control; the American delegation declined. The site for this historic "conference" is now known as "Conference House," and is located in Staten Island's Conference House Park.
